LEAVITT 6, FREEPORT 3

An 11-hit performance helped the 10th-seeded Hornets earn a Class B South preliminary round win in Freeport and end the seventh-seeded Falcons’ streak of runs to the state final at three.

Leavitt (9-8) advances to face No. 2 Yarmouth (11-5) in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

While the offense was racking up hits, Hornets starter Noah Carpenter was holding Freeport (8-9) to three hits in five innings. Colten Taylor relieved Carpenter and pitched two hitless to earn a save.

After the Falcons evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Leavitt responded with a three-run fifth to take the lead for good. Freeport plated two in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hornets added one run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Will Keach tripled and was one of three Leavitt batters with two hits, along with Taylor and Kade Knight.

Catcher Gus Hollen had two of Freeport’s hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs.
