The fourth-seeded Stags (14-5) revved up their defense in the second quarter, sparking a 26-8 advantage that paved the way to Class AA North quarterfinal win over the fifth-seeded Broncos (10-9) in Portland.

The Stags advance to a regional semifinal Thursday against No. 1 Oxford Hills at Cross Insurance Arena.

After an even first quarter, Cheverus built a 40-21 halftime lead, then put the game away with a 14-2 run to close the third quarter as they stretched their margin to 61-32.

Silvano Ismail continued his strong play for the Stags with 19 points and strong rebounding from the guard position. Leo McNabb helped set the defensive tempo and scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter. Gio St. Onge was consistent throughout the game and led Cheverus in scoring with 20 points.

Hampden was paced by its inside duo of Landon Gabric (22 points) and JJ Wolfington (13 points).
