Cheverus 48, Edward Little 25

Cheverus opened defense of its Class AA girls’ basketball title with a 48-25 win Friday against Edward Little in a North quarterfinal.

Cheverus (17-2), the No. 2 seed, dominated despite shooting 25 percent from the field in the first half. The Stags had a 36-13 edge in shots, thanks to offensive rebounding and a defense that forced seventh-seeded Edward Little (7-12) into 12 first-half turnovers. Cheverus led 21-8 after the first quarter and 29-10 at the half.

Cheverus advances to a semifinal against No. 3 Bangor at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cross Insurance Arena. The Stags lost at Bangor in the season opener – the teams’ only regular-season meeting.

Cheverus junior standout center Emma Lizotte injured her left arm in the third quarter after getting tangled up with falling players and hitting the floor awkwardly. She did not return to the game and appeared to be in discomfort as she sat on the bench, keeping her left elbow at an angle for the rest of the game.

“It might have been like a funny bone, but we don’t know. She’s going to get it checked,” said Cheverus Coach Bill Goodman. “The trainer wanted to be very careful. It’s very unfortunate.”

Jenna Jensen led Cheverus in scoring with 16 points. Maddie Fitzpatrick added 13.

Rachel Penny scored nine points for Edward Little.
