MARSHWOOD 2, THORNTON ACADEMY 1, 11 INNINGS

Sam Gennaro singled home Ronan Garrett with one out in the 11th inning to give Marshwood a 2-1 win over Thornton Academy in a showdown between Class A South baseball contenders Friday in South Berwick.

Thornton starting pitcher Beck Edgerly worked into the 11th inning before reaching his pitch limit, leaving with the bases loaded and nobody out. Reliever Jacob Fish retired the first batter he faced before yielding Gennaro’s winning hit.

Tyler Hussey put Marshwood (11-1) ahead in the fourth inning when he drove in Brady Isabelle. Thornton (9-2) tied it in the sixth on an RBI single by Noah Fullerton that brought home Carter Moody.

Garrett hit a single and a double, and Michael Sbrizza also had two hits for Marshwood. Fullerton and Fish each got two hits for Thornton.

It was the second loss this week for the Golden Trojans, who were ranked No. 2 in this week’s Varsity Maine Top 10. Fourth-ranked Marshwood has won nine in a row.

Gus Alexander earned the victory with 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Charlie Hudson.
