THORNTON ACADEMY 6, SCARBOROUGH 5, 8 INNINGS

The Trojans scored in the top of the eighth inning to beat the defending state champion Red Storm in a Class A South semifinal in Scarborough.

No. 3 Thornton Academy (14-4) advances to face the winner of Saturday’s game between Biddeford and Marshwood in the Class A final at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. Scarborough ends the year at 16-2.

The Trojans, No. 3 in the latest Varsity Maine Top 10, scored four times in the top of the first inning and took a 5-1 lead in the second. Scarborough, the No. 2 team in the Varsity Maine poll, scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Brennan Tabor was 3 for 4 for Thornton, and Cameron Cyr had two hits, including a triple.

Finn Coburn, Matt Fallona and Kaiden Carrell each had three hits for Scarborough.
