Cheverus stopped a 2-point conversion attempt with 2:04 remaining after Gorham rallied for two late touchdowns, holding on for a 21-20 victory in an interclass football game Saturday in Portland.

Joe Osei’s second touchdown run gave Class C Cheverus a 21-6 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Gorham quarterback Izak Young directed a furious comeback by the Class B Rams.

Young connected with Jack Karlonas for a 7-yard touchdown, then passed to Casey Skolfield for a 2-point conversion that made it 21-14. Cheverus drove into Gorham territory on its next possession, but Osei was stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Rams 30. Young quickly ripped off runs of 10 and 35 yards, and eventually threw a 15-yard TD pass to Garrett Poulin. Young’s pass on the conversion attempt fell incomplete, however, and the Stags recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Young scrambled 80 yards for the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter, but a bad snap on the conversion left Gorham with a 6-0 lead. Osei’s 17-yard touchdown run and Devin Kelly’s conversion made it 7-6 at halftime.

Matthew Baker powered in from the 1 in the third quarter, and Osei scored from the 8 early in the fourth.
