A South quarterfinal: #8-Westbrook vs. #1-Mt. Ararat

at Portland Expo

Monday, February 19, 2024

Mt. Ararat 50, Westbrook 36

The top-seeded Eagles (17-2) scored 14 straight points in the third quarter to stymie a comeback bid and put away No. 8 Westbrook (8-12) in a Class A South girls’ basketball quarterfinal at the Portland Expo.

It was the 100th career victory for Coach Julie Petrie, whose team will take on fourth-seeded Fryeburg Academy (10-9) in the semifinals at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Expo.

Mt. Ararat seemingly was on its way to a comfortable win after emerging from a helter-skelter first half with a 30-16 lead over the stubborn, board-crashing Blue Blazes.

But Westbrook, which lost by 23 and 13 points to the Eagles in January, pulled to within 31-25 in the first two minutes of the third quarter.

Mt. Ararat then called a timeout and responded with 14 straight points to open a 20-point lead.

Kayleigh Wagg led Mt. Ararat with 17 points. Kylee Young paced the Blue Blazes with 10.
