at Augusta Civic Center

Wells 46, Winslow 24

Megyn Mertens scored 18 points to lift third-seeded Wells to a 46-24 victory over sixth-seeded Winslow in the Class C South quarterfinal Tuesday at the Augusta Civic Center.

Mertens, one of the Warriors’ three seniors, said it was nice to advance to the semifinal round after losing last year to Biddeford in the Class B quarterfinal.

“This team, we’re so close,” said Mertens. “We really love each other, and I really think our chemistry shows on the court. So it’s just nice to see all that hard work pay off and get that win.”

Wells (17-2) hit six 3-pointers, but Mertens’ scoring in the paint proved to be the key for the Warriors.

“I think something that’s great about our team is (Mertens) draws a lot of eyes, right?” Wells coach Sandi Purcell said. “So when she’s in the paint, people automatically go in with the game plan of shutting her down. When our shooters are able to produce because of that, because she’s pulling defenders away from them, they start hitting a few and now teams have to choose, ‘Who are we going to guard, who are we going to stop?'”

Senior Payton Fazzina added 10 points for Wells.

Sophomore Emma Fales finished with a team-high 11 points for the Black Raiders (10-9).
