Austin Cole shot through a gap to score on a 36-yard run with 5:33 remaining as the Golden Trojans (4-2) wrapped up a victory against the stubborn Red Riots (2-4) at South Portland.

Thornton took a 6-0 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter when Xander Cantara hauled in a 19-yard pass from Wyatt Benoit, and that’s how it stayed until Cole clinched it.

After Cole scored, South Portland made its first true threat when Matthew Berry’s long kickoff return was followed by Darius Johnson’s reception to the Thornton 5. But a fumble inches short of the goal line was recovered by Benoit with 3:31 remaining.

A last-minute South Portland threat following a punt ended with an interception inside the 5 with 30 seconds to play.
