The second-seeded Monmouth Academy boys basketball team made its free throws down the stretch and held off No. 7 Telstar, 54-40, in a Class D South quarterfinal Saturday morning at the Augusta Civic Center.
Telstar (6-13) pulled within 42-39 midway through the fourth quarter, but Jacob Harmon made five free throws in the fourth quarter and Levi Laverdiere hit four to help Monmouth (14-5) secure the victory.
Monmouth sank with 21 free throws, while Telstar had six.
Laverdiere led the Mustangs with 19 points. Harmon finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Alex Dougherty scored nine of his 13 points for Telstar in the third quarter. Connor Deprey also tallied 13 points for the Rebels, who trailed 36-32 after three quarters.
Monmouth next plays third-seeded Madison on Wednesday.
