CHEVERUS 3, SANFORD 2, 8 INNINGS
Grady Hughes hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the third-seeded Stags (13-3) a Class A South quarterfinal win over the sixth-seeded Spartans (12-5) in Portland.
Cheverus, the No. 4 team in the Varsity Maine poll, advances to face No. 10 Noble in the semifinals on Saturday.
Jackson Holmes hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for Cheverus to send the game to extra innings. Scottie Sockabasin got the Stags on the board with an RBI single in the sixth. Grady Hughes and Nathan Collins each had a double for Cheverus.
Stags starter Colton Jewett pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out 12 and walking one. Ben Dumais recorded the final two outs and was credited with the win.
Ryan Alexander and Drew McGrath each had an RBI for Sanford.
