A trio of freshmen helped the top-seeded Bucks (16-2) advance past the fourth-seeded Vikings (13-4) in six innings in a Class D South semifinal in Buckfield.

Buckfield will face No. 2 North Yarmouth Academy (15-1) or No. 3 Forest Hills (14-2) in the regional final Tuesday at St. Joseph’s College.

Vinalhaven opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, but freshman Grace Veinott answered with a two-run single in the bottom half to put Buckfield up 2-1.

That lead that lasted until the fifth, when the Bucks plated six runs, highlighted by freshman Grace Richardson’s two-run double.

Buckfield finished off the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Richardson was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI, while Veinott went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Sophie St. Pierre also had two hits for Buckfield.

Buckfield freshman pitcher Daisy Vining tossed a one-hitter and held the Vikings scoreless over the final five innings. She struck out four and walked two.

Lydia Wentworth had Vinalhaven’s only hit.
