Darius Johnson scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter, Shea Healy connected with Alex Horton for a clinching 19-yard touchdown catch, and South Portland earned a 16-7 victory over Deering in a Class A football game Friday night in South Portland.

The only scoring in the first half was a safety for South Portland (3-3) after a bad snap by Deering (2-4) into the end zone from punt formation.

The Rams then took a 7-2 lead in the third quarter on a 43-yard run by David Roth. But Johnson capped a long South Portland drive with a 5-yard run from the Wildcat formation late in the third, and Healy passed to Horton for a 2-point conversion.

Horton’s TD extended the lead midway through the fourth quarter.
