Owen Taylor intercepted an attempted screen pass and returned it 59 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, propelling Westbrook to a 27-21 win over Cheverus in a Class B South football game Saturday in Portland.

Turnovers played a huge role in the outcome. Westbrook’s first three touchdowns – all by Cole Tanner – were set up by two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt. Tanner then ended a final Cheverus drive with an interception deep in Westbrook territory.

Cheverus (4-3) led 7-0 after one quarter, thanks to AJ Lauture’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Kevin True.

Tanner tied it with a 5-yard run, and his 17-yard reception from Gio Staples gave the Blue Blazes (6-1) a 14-7 halftime lead.

Cheverus pulled even in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Colton Jewett, but Tanner put Westbrook in front again with a 13-yard run.

The Stags made it 21-21 early in the fourth when Nick Deschambault hit Lauture for a 36-yard touchdown catch.
